Overview

Client: Illinois Tollway

Location: Oakbrook, IL

Description

The Phase II design contract I-17-4299 was divided into two construction contracts: I-18-4388 and I-21-4834. The I-21-4834 contract consisted of Phase II Engineering Services for work tasks that included the preparation of contract plans and engineering studies as well as other technical services for the proposed roadway reconstruction and improvements of the I-294 Tri-State Tollway from the East West Connector (M.P. 29.4) to Roosevelt Road (M.P. 30.6). The work for this project included roadway pavement markings, signage, lighting improvements, utility relocation, and drainage structures. Most of the roadway elements had to be reconstructed, which included mainline pavement, concrete median barrier, and inside shoulders to upgrade to flex lanes.

Services Provided

d’Escoto provided Phase II drainage design support for the project. The flooding of the I-294 toll plaza presented itself as a challenge while conducting the drainage design. Specifically, d’Escoto overcame the obstacle by performing the following:

• Utilized CivilStorm and 3D Subsurface Utility Design and Analysis (SUDA) to create the hydrological and hydraulic model for inlet spacing, storm sewer sizing, and detention design for 50-year and 100-year rainfall events
• Prepared drainage technical report to convey the information generated by SUDA
• Utilized OpenRoads Designer to develop a 3D model for each detention pond to address the flooding caused by undersized storm sewers
• Designed temporary drainage for 8 MOT stages
• Designed the proposed landscape, erosion, and sediment control plans
