The Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting Station (ARFF) #2 is a 25,000-sf single-story facility with four drive-through vehicle apparatus bays that can accommodate up to 8 vehicles. It is a Combined Station, providing both ARFF and structural firefighting response capability. The ARFF Facility is divided into three functional areas: the Apparatus Bays, Watch/Alarm Room/Administration Areas, and the Firefighter Housing Area. The housing area, which encompasses 15,000 sf, includes living, dining, training, recreation, dormitory, locker, and office space. CDA’s vision of the future made possible for this station to be one of the most advanced and modern stations within the City of Chicago.
This project was made necessary because the original ARFF was in the footprint of the new Runway 9C/27C. Close coordination with the runway project, therefore, was required, along with the nearby Cargo Development project and the East Airfield Lighting Control Vault project. Coordination with both the Chicago Department of Aviation as well as the Chicago Fire Department was necessary as well.
Site utilities included power, communication, natural gas, potable/domestic/fire suppression water provided by 10-inch water mains, sanitary and storm sewer. This project also includes construction of the roadways, parking area and landscaping within the project site.
Our team provided construction inspection, quality assurance, scheduling services, contract administration and office engineering support for this project—providing managerial and clerical services to implement and enforce all applicable codes, standards, specifications, policies and procedures. With a full understanding of the project scope, plans and specifications, our team also coordinated between the direct project assignment and other active Program assignments.
